Hear from Dr Allan Shaw, Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) at the University of Sheffield, as he reflects on his journey on Cohort Four of the Prosper programme.

Thank you for giving me the confidence to champion my career growth!

What attracted you to the Prosper programme?

I was moving into the final part of my first postdoc contract and felt that my career development had stagnated. From reading the testimonials of prior alumni, Prosper felt like a fantastic opportunity to understand my existing strengths and gain confidence planning out the next steps of my career.

What aspects of Prosper did you find the most beneficial?

The solidarity with my fellow attendees was inspiring, regardless of our differing fields. I learned how to champion myself and built a network of talented ECRs across the White Rose network.

Was there anything about the programme that surprised you or that you didn’t expect?

The interview process on the final session was eye-opening and has been valuable now that I’m applying for new roles. More importantly, being part of an interview panel was an exciting surprise and a really interesting experience.

How has participating in the programme influenced your thinking about your future career path?

I aim to continue within academia, but the path forward was very unclear. This programme has renewed my conviction and since I have written my first grant application, pushed forward career development options and applied for multiple roles.

What message would you like to send to postdocs who are unsure about their career paths and considering taking part in this programme?

Prosper is an incredible programme that I hope becomes available for all UK-based postdocs. From understanding our hidden values, dispelling myths around leaving academia and growing with other amazing postdocs, Prosper has been the best career development course I’ve attended and will take some beating. Sign up!
