The University of Sheffield has hosted the Equity in Leadership (EiL) programme, a transformative initiative aimed at accelerating the diversification of leadership in higher education. This cross-institutional programme, co-created with delegates from the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, and York, funded by the White Rose University Consortium.
The event began with an opening address from Prof. Koen Lamberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, who welcomed participants and dedicated his remarks to hearing directly from them on the programme’s impact. Prof. Lamberts highlighted the programme’s mission to dismantle systemic barriers and address cultural biases that disproportionately impact staff from global majority backgrounds. Attendees also took part in a high-profile networking session, fostering collaboration and dialogue to drive equitable change across institutions.
“We are honoured to be part of the Equity in Leadership programme, which represents a significant step towards fostering diversity and inclusion in higher education,” said Prof. Lamberts. “This initiative not only highlights our commitment to addressing systemic barriers but also showcases the collaborative spirit among institutions in driving meaningful change. Together, we can create an environment where all voices are heard and valued.”
The programme takes a holistic approach, providing targeted leadership development for participants while also equipping managers and senior leaders with tools to create equitable workplaces. By addressing the root causes of underrepresentation, the Equity in Leadership programme aims to drive meaningful, long-lasting change in leadership structures within higher education.
The Networking Event, hosted by The University of Sheffield, brought together senior leaders, participants and line managers. Speaking at the event, Professor Robert Mokaya, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sheffield, shared his inspiring leadership journey and offered valuable advice for emerging leaders.
Reflecting on his childhood and career journey, Professor Mokaya said, “Growing up, I was aware of the statistics that could have defined my future, but I was determined not to let them dictate my path. My career has been shaped by resilience and a belief that barriers are meant to be overcome, not accepted. I’m proud to see programmes like Equity in Leadership helping to ensure that future leaders, regardless of background, are not limited by the numbers but inspired to forge their own path.”
His words resonated with many attendees, reinforcing the importance of hope and championing diversity at all levels of leadership.
Dr. Karen Hinxman, Head of the White Rose University Consortium, who has led the development of the programme, expressed her pride in the initiative. “The Equity in Leadership programme exemplifies our commitment to fostering diverse talent and creating a leadership culture where everyone can thrive. Across the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, and York, we have incredible colleagues with immense potential. This programme is not only about supporting their leadership journeys but also about equipping our institutions to challenge the inequities that persist.”
This launch of the Equity in Leadership programme at the University of Sheffield represents a major milestone in higher education’s journey toward leadership that truly reflects the diversity of the community it serves. The programme aligns with the university’s vision of fostering a diverse and inclusive community where staff from all backgrounds can thrive.
As part of the broader strategy, the programme includes workshops, sponsorship, mentoring, coaching and career development resources for participants. It also involves ongoing collaboration with senior leaders to ensure that inclusive leadership becomes the norm across departments and faculties.
